31 years old, receding hairline. Propecia?

I noticed my hairline had receded just a bit in my early twenties. At first I got pretty nervous but over the years it never changed at all. I also had a very small patch of hair (about the size of a grape nut) that fell out, located dead center of my hairline just above my forehead. I saw a dermatologist about it and he said I was fine and not to worry, it was not due to male pattern balding. Anyway, I'm now in my early thirties and things havn't changed much at all, except I noticed my hair has started to get a tad thinner around the right side of my hairline. I keep my hair buzzed short so it was easier to notice. If I grew my hair out I'm sure I would have never noticed it at all and it's barely noticable now except to me because I'm paranoid and monitor closely. Beyond that and the receding hairline, I have a full head of hair.

Is 31 too old for propecia to work for me? I really dont need to grow back any hair, just need to keep what I have, unless I could grow back my receding hairling but I hear propecia does not work there.

Your thoughts?

well, propecia is unlikely to grow back any hair that you've lost. It will slow down or halt hair loss for most men.

If youre sure your hair loss hasn't progressed much in 10 years or whatever, I really wouldn't bother with propecia. It could be just a "mature hairline". You could maybe try Rogaine to regrow the missing parts.

I told my roommate I was going to schedule an appointment to see a dermatologist so I could get on propecia as an insurance to keep my hair strong and thick and she said why the f*** would you do that, your hair is fine! I guess I'm just paranoid it will go someday since I already have a bit of receding hairlines, it's not like I have a Tom Cruise/Brad Pitt full head of hair. If i got on propecia along with nizorla (sp?) shampoo, this would give me some confidence I wont lose it and i wont have to be looking in the mirror constantly for inspection. I guess I could throw in my rogaine as well but man that will really start to add up for a guy who's not exactly 'balding' just yet. But I know the earlier you combat hairloss the better and I'd rather do it now than wait for more hairs to fall out, never to see regrowth in those areas again.

Thanks for your reply. Any more advice is appreciated.

Yeah, up to you about the Propecia dude... I personally think it wouldn't make that much of a difference. Like flimflam said, if you haven't lost a lot of hair in the past 10 years, you probably wouldn't notice much of a result except maybe after another 10 years looking back at now.

If your roommate doesn't think you have anything to worry about, maybe you are overreacting a bit... that's kinda easy to do - it's hard to get an accurate measure on how bad or good your hair actually looks.

If you were only going to do 1 of them I'd probably choose a minoxidil product like Rogaine or liquid as this is the only thing that actually proven to regrow hair. You may have a good chance to regrow some of your hairline. But chances are, if it's not male pattern baldness and just a mature hairline you might not even see satisfactory results from a whole regimen. Maybe go and see a dermatologist just to get a second opinion, see what they think.

Yeah I'm gonna schedule a visit with a dermatologist today and get a second opinion. Maybe later on today I'll shoot some photos of my hairline and see what you guys think. Thanks for the advice.

That's what I'm worried about. Now that I'm in my 30s things may start to speed up and I wanna be ready to combat the cancer if she decides to spread.
