Hello Everyone,

Im 23 years old and my hair has been thinning since October of last year. It started on the right temple and then spread to the rest of the hairline including the left temple. My vertex is also thinning and a bald spot is starting to form as well as some thin spots on the crown.

And lastly the front 2/3 of my head is thinner overall compared to my back, which is the same level of hair loss my father and grandfather have, about a Norwood 5-6. My father went bald in his late 20's early 30's. My father's side of the family has a lot of baldness at a relatively younger age. My mom's side of the family has slow balding over decades and no baldness at all.

However last summer I went through a period of 4 months from June to September where I didn't wash my hair with shampoo (NoPoo), because I heard about it being good for your hair. Before my hair loss my hair was extremely thick, frizzy, and hard to style at times, so I thought this might make it easier to manage. However it was just a greasy, waxy mess. So I eventually quit NoPoo when there was no improvement on my hair and at the same time I first noticed the beginning of my hair loss.

So my question is, by not washing my scalp properly for 4 months is it possible I gave myself Telogen Effluvium, fungal infection, etc that eventually kick started my male pattern baldness genes early? Or do I just have Telogen Effluvium, fungal infection, etc by itself? Or do I have male pattern baldness by itself and it was just a coincidence? I also used to use a lot of Fibers and Waxes to style my hair, and I wouldn't wash them out for days at a time. I now don't use any hair products and wash my hair every 3-4 days, when I used to wash only once a week or less. Can not washing your scalp properly cause your hair follicles to get clogged? And after you resume washing correctly would this resolve or no? Also after I noticed my hair loss I got really depressed and stayed awake all night and slept during the day. This went on for all of Winter. Could this have made it worse? The only time I ever shed hair is when I wash it. I think my hair loss has slowed down recently as I don't notice as much hair loss when I wash it, but it still looks worse as time goes on, so I'm still clearly losing hair. Also I noticed I had some red dots on my vertex. What do you think they are; inflammation? Pimples? Something else?

I'm pretty sure it's male pattern baldness, so I'm probably gonna start finasteride really soon. What do you think it is?

Thank You.

I doesn't look like hairloss to me. Your hairline is fine and you simply have a whirl on your crown. As for Telogen Effluvium, do your hairs have white bulb when they fall out? That is usually sign of Telogen Effluvium.

I have the white bulb on some of the hairs, but not all. Definitely not a significant amount of them. The white dot could be the root or maybe sebum. On the crown those thin spots used to not be there.

Here's some more pics of my hairline. The slight recession might be more noticeable at these angles.

Thanks.

Looks like you may be just starting to recede. Hard to say though. Would almost definitely be male pattern baldness if its your hairline receding. Crown looks normal though.
