Hi,

This is basically my first time consulting this issue and i've been aware of it for quite a while now. I've always, since birth i guess had a deep hair line and a "cow-lick" and quite thin hair; so since i grew my hair long i always just figured i had a deep hair line anyway as it receded, but now im really starting to notice how quickly im losing it. On both parental sides, no one is necessarily bald but a lot of receding hair lines and bald patches. I also suffer from depression and anxiety and im sure the stress from that is at least a catalyst to whatever state my hair is headed. This has also been getting me down too, without a sob story my hair is the only thing that makes me even remotely decent looking.

From the short research i've done, i know that i have a shot at maybe not growing my hair back but retaining it at least. I've attached some photos of my hair line.

I want to know for myself, at 21, what is my best route for tackling this issue?

very kind regards in advance :)

Hey mate you are in the right place. Generally when fighting hairloss there is only really one long term option and that is finasteride. People do have success using rogaine which is a less extreme and OTC treatment on its own, however that alone does not fight the root cause of male pattern baldness. It promotes regrowth however it does not reduce the DHT in ones system which is responsible for hairloss. Given you are young and your hair is overall is in good condition, you stand a very good chance at maintenance and possibly some regrowth on the hairline if you were too take finasteride and apply rogaine.

Given you are only 21 the hairloss is classified as aggressive and in cases like this you simply need to be on finasteride if you want any chance of long term maintenance. Many people on here take it and other than a couple of sides such as slightly lowered sex drive, and watery semen, it is largely considered safe although there are people out there who have extreme sides and that cannot be denied. It is very unlikely you will be one of these people however to say that one won't be prone to sides is also not being totally honest. I have been on it for just over 2 years and I have noticed a slightly lowered sex drive however I find it largely inconsequential to my everyday life. Do some research and figure out what you want to do sooner than later. If you decide to get on finasteride, you should be able to get a prescription from a doctor no questions asked like I did, no need to see a dermatologist or anything.
