Just imagine if Dr. Phil had had a hair transplant in his 20's. Weve seen his son on TV with him, has decent hair. But its gonna go in the future just like his dads.
People who start balding early in their 20's almost always completely horseshoe bald (and their hippocratic wreaths tend to be thinnish ones when they are in their 60's). You can move hair in a transplant that was going to fall out in your 40's if left where it was, so by donor dominance theory, its going to fall out to where its moved to (i.e. the front of your damned head).
Many ethical Docs wont perform transplants on men under 30. You have to be honest with yourself about how far you baldness will go in your life. You will not be able to buzz your head after a hair transplant because of the big scar line that you'll have afterwards. Ive seen a few former hair transplant's with thinnish frontal hair, but a huge vertex baldspot above hippocratic wreaths that were only a couple of inches wide in the very back (and thin too). These guys, although the transplanted plugs were pretty well done (practically see through thin in good light however) paid alot of money to look like they balded in a really funny way. Kinda feel that they much would have rather just buzzed their heads way back when.
hair transplants can be great for patients who arent going to severely bald, but the prospective patient must be sure that he isnt gonna pull a Patrick Stewart of Star Trek before jumping in and getting surgery. He will be very sad if that happens. Hopefully companies like Intercyclex will be bringing cloning to market in the next 5-10 years and genetic baldness will be defeated forever, but we cant count on that until it happens as we dont know what obstacles mother nature might present in their research.
I hope all who read these forums keep in mind that the salesmen who work for big hair tranplant outfits are always looking for ways to drum up business. They log on to forums, make up phoney names, and post happy stories. They get paid to drum up business ANY WAY THEY CAN. Ive been lied to to my face on many visits to transplant businesses by asking questions that I already knew the answers to. As a young man, they know youre freaking out about impending baldness, they dont care if your screwed for life later on, that just guarantees you will get more surgeries to stave off a ridiculous appearance of bald scalp behind the plugs three or four more times. So that initial 3000$ investment might wind up being 30K over the next 20 years. Ultimately one will run out of donor if they completely horshoe and be forced to spend 1500-2000 a year at hair club for a lousy wig. The ads for the big outfits act as if "everybody's doing this" and offer consolation to the prospective client. Well, no, everybody is not doing this. Bosley has only done 180,000 or so surgeries WORLDWIDE. Most men are waiting and hoping that science will come up with something better and more elegant than simply moving hair from the back to the front. Men who are going to go completely bald would be well advised to do likewise.
