As the title suggests, I regularly started finasteride exactly last year. Hair loss-wise, I am at the NW2 stage, I have waist-length curly but thin hair and the legendary retrograde alopecia (thin sides and behind the ear), I have also used minoxidil for 5 months without any result. My take:
1. finasteride or no finasteride effect, I still have the same hair (I remember being NW2 since 20, I am 26 and a half now).
2. My hair is still growing long.
3. Nothing helped with retrograde alopecia and I think that such a condition is extremely hard to treat, unless I get on some kind of an anti-androgen or something.
Pics comparison now (that's my middle-parting in case you're wondering and I wonder if the now-better camera has a better visual effect on my hair or finasteride is really doing its job. Oh and yeah, my right temple is more receded than the left one):
