I left a desk job in marketing six years ago to build furniture full time out of a small shop in the Blue Ridge foothills. Most of what I make is white oak and walnut—tables, chairs, the occasional commissioned piece that keeps me up at night. I'm self-taught, so I've made every mistake twice. These days I spend as much time helping newer folks dodge those mistakes as I do at the bench. Coffee, sawdust, and decent hand tools keep me going.
