If it was like that on day one, then thats unacceptable unless its not fully bonded down. 6-month is normal for most systems with daily wear.
Rotating 2 or more, wearer care, sun damage, washing, heat exposure, friction and density are some of the factors that we can control. A pieces knotting...
My experience of TCP was from about 10 years ago. At the time, the pieces were not custom made more a tailored off the shelf piece, recoloured and thinned. At the start I wasnt as knowledgeable, but after a few months I realised the density was all wrong and "more a wall of hair"
As said that...

Yeah
I feel you. If its not a wonky lace cut, I will snip the hair accidentally - I mean there is so much hair before the cut in. Nail scissors, good lighting and allocated time is my friend
As above, any mainstream brand seems to work for me. 2 things to be cautious about is dye on the lace esp at the front.
Also if you are dyeing to match your native hair, maybe wear and dye both system and native to give a close match
When I was getting started I recall you use to get able to order custom pieces with "baby hairs" and scalloping; so as to break up a uniform front hair line - not something I have done or seen close up though
