when you start, you mostly maintain what you have. Very slowly, it gets thicker and the holes of thinning patch up a bit.
I experienced no side effects except mild depression (as in, " mental fog"). This is largely individual, though I doubt very many people at all experience irreversible effects
I've been off of finasteride for a month, and only remained on sawtooth palmetto supplements and shampoo, with nizoral shampoo every few days.
Yet, shedding has completely stopped and not returned. I rarely even see one hair come out.
Previously I would shed 15 or so hairs from vertex. Now...
I was more thinking the hair is unhealthy and "breaking" rather than falling out from the follicle itself. IIRC, the white bulbs signify the hair has reached the end of its "life" and falls out. I see that in around 1/10 hairs
I'm kinda wondering if it's that my hair is inherently unhealthy, so...
My long hair was shedding frequently. Cut my hair, and rarely see any hairs fall out. I look on my work table, lots of long hairs shed but very rarely see any short ones.
I do have a habit of tugging at my hair and messing around with it when stressed (always). This doesn't seem scientific...
There were some studies on a few miscellaneous things which suggest that they provide minor results in halting hair loss, such as topical melatonin and saw palmetto. I use hair surge shampoo and it does help a bit, or at least reduces shedding. Bear in mind these will have very minor effects
looks like mine OP, I am 23 as well. Very little frontal recession. Even has that "double whorl" pattern
On the bright side, mine "closed up" to a fairly unnoticeable. Regiment which might help you:
.5mg finasteride (the side effects are more rare and less severe than internet makes them out...
Because everything you read on the internet is completely factual and real, and everyone has a medical degree on the internet.

makes me wonder a bit about the connection of alopecia areata and androgenetic alopecia.
I remember reading that Alopecia Areata is related to autoimmune response. A quick read on JAK-STAT receptor pulled up this interesting line:
it seems like crown loss is considered less severe and there are better treatments for it. It's also not terribly hard to hide if it's less severe
In a weird way I'm glad I almost exclusively have crown loss.
