Physicians at New Hair Institute (NHI) have pioneered a new technique that will help eliminate donor scarring and open up the world of surgical hair restoration to people who previously were not candidates for surgery.

According to the August issue of the Journal of Dermatologic Surgery, the new FOX Procedure for hair transplantation can be performed without a raditional surgical incision. Healing time is reduced and the risk of surgical scarring is practically eliminated. The FOX technique, also known as FOllicular unit eXtraction, allows patients with small balding areas, limited donor supplies, tight scalps, or low hair density to achieve good results without a scar in the donor area. In addition, the FOX technique can be used for procedures that require a very small number of grafts such as augmentation of eyebrows, eyelashes, or the mustache area. This technique is particularly useful for patients who wear their hair closely cropped, actors who must shave their heads, and athletes who can not lose time for recovery and need to be very active within days of the procedure.

The FOX procedure involves the direct extraction of the follicular units from the patient’s donor area using a small trephine type instrument. Healing is quick, scarring is virtually nonexistent, and discomfort in the donor area has been practically eliminated. The FOXtm procedure provides an important option for those patients who were hesitant or unable to undergo traditional surgery. The article in Dermatologic Surgery discusses the research, methodology and detailed results of Dr. Rassman and Dr. Bernstein. This new procedure is currently available at NHI’s Los Angeles, San Jose, Fort Lee, and Manhattan offices.
