Hello All -

We're looking to discourage creation of multiple Topics that have nothing in them but YouTube clips.

If you need to share something from YouTube, please do so here.

We'd like to keep topics filled with productive discussion.

Note: This thread is not for anything and everything. Its just intended to provide a place where you can put useful / interesting video clips rather than create an entirely new thread. You can always link here from a discussion.

Thanks!

Arithmetic, Population and Energy

Very interesting lecture by physicist Albert Bartlett on exponential growth and it's consequences in terms of population and energy. The central point is pretty simple but an important one that puts things in perspective. I think the guy is oversimplistic about things but the perspective he tries to give is usually ignored. Any thoughts on this?

Re: Arithmetic, Population and Energy

Population growth rate is changing all over the world. Experts say that 2.1 births per woman is the magic number that will keep the population stable. In western countries that number is somewhere around 1.7-1.8, so western society is actually shrinking. The positive growth of population in western countries is a result of net migration.

Before you jump on the bandwagon and say that the poor countries are reproducing like rabbits, you have to remember that birth rate per woman in the poorer countries is also going down.

For example, China's population density shows that in the next 50 years or so their population will go into a steep decline. This is a direct result of one kid per family policy. We still have to wait 50 years for the Chinese population to go into decline because the density is around 30-40yo population. Basically, we have to wait until our generation starts dying (horrible thing to say).

From mathematical point of view, if the first derivative of the population gives the population growth rate, the second derivative would give the change in the population growth rate and that is a negative number. With the current trend, in a generation or two the population growth rate would also go into negative figures. We don't necessarily need both those numbers to go into negative figures, but a flat graph would be desirable so that future generations can sustain themselves without fighting for limited resources.

My personal thoughts??? I think some of the poorer countries need to work harder on family planning, but the current trends show that we don't have to worry for the future of our planet.

I also think having more than 2 or 3 kids is a selfish behaviour. My personal aim is 2 kids, enough to replace me and my future partner.

The bayonet might have a slight point to it but it doesn't have an edge to the blade.
