n my country, Singapore.....all of them are asians.....before i started using propecia, i talked to my pharmacist friend who is supllying me with the propecia and asked him about the testimonials on the prodcut, he says that almost all of them had no problems on it and thaat the infamous shed never occured to them....Sounds pretty strange....Buy why are there people in tis forum compalining about the induced shed?......Is it because male pattern baldness favours the caucasian race and screws them more?....or has it got something to do with diet which may influence propecia's method of inhibtion?.....or is it the genes?

That's a good point.
I think users in forums do not represent the average responder to hairloss treatements, as seen by your pharmacist.

The whole shed thing is massively over sold on forums like these, newbies pick up on this mania and expect a shed without question, they stare at their hairlines for weeks and when a few extra hairs do fall out they post:

"hey guys youz gat t' help me, I is sheddin' like a frekin' pig here"

I have seen many posts from newbies like "Hey how bad is the shed", "If I drink my own blood, will that help me not shed" or "will my hair grow back after the shed" and so forth, all of them 100% sure they will experience a giant extended cosmetic shed.

My opinion is that the large majority of propecia users experience no additional shedding of hair (beyond the natural rate) and of those who do have a propecia induced shed it is rarely cosmetic.

I think these people really ARE shedding... but the shedding is not due to the finasteride, it is due to the fact that they are just going through a shed.

according to the pamphlet that comes with propecia, the success rate in Asians is much lower compared to caucasians. Can anyone verify?

if you were to buy the (real) merck's propecia, the reading material that comes with it contains information about their trial. One section of which is a statistical breakdown based on ethnic group. They did not mention in words that it works better or worse between groups but look at the actual numbers.

could simply just be a lucky pattern. not necessarily representative of an entire race of people.

re: Shed

It is very possible that the shedding on propecia is really just a natural shed that goes on for all of us, but based on my experience, I cannot agree. After about 1.5 months on Propecia and 2.5 months on minoxidil I was shedding so awful. I have hair that is about 2-3 inches long and when I showered, both my hands were filled with long hair. I am talking hundreds of hairs covering my entire hands, gross!
Right now, my hair looks awful but is coming back into shape. I live in New England and after going through the awful shed I could feel the cold and see my scalp clearly. Now that I am getting a little regrowth and my head feels warmer and my hair looks better daily. The shedding is now only a few hairs a day.
Now I have about a norwood 1.5 with thinning hair. So I have a alot more hair then most on this board and therefore far mroe hair to shed. I think increased shedding due to Propecia/minoxidil does exist and the degree of shedding really depends on the patient and their case history.

the matter is not so simple, firstly less asians lose hair compared to caucasians. Now anyone can explain that? But asians DO LOSE HAIR regardless of diet or not.So this shows that something else like genetics play a part in the variance of the 2 groups.Simply put it Caucasians seem to descend from an ancient ape who is already predisposed to hair loss.I believe our ancestors were all different in genetic make up which is why asians are yellow, brown, smaller in size while caucasians are white and bigger.defientely its due to genetics and male pattern baldness falls somewhere in there

There are Differences in ethnic races due to enviromental factors, not some ancient ape.
