Whenever I read a good artical on something, I always save the link to a word Doctor with a brief description above the link so I know where to find it if I need it.This makes it easier instead of sifting through hundreds of links in your bookmark.

Anyway.....

Well since my list on green tea is getting so huge that I have added to for over a year, I thought I would share it. I have dumped coffee and the diet soda I was chugging down a month ago for NOTHING but Green Tea, I must say I have never felt better in my life. Here is my list and yes some address hairloss so it is on-topic. :)

Yes some are far fetched but even if half of it is true, well why not?

By inducing Rho signaling, the green tea extract made the cancer cells more mature and made them bind together more closely — a process called cell adhesion. Both the maturity of the cells and the adhesion inhibited the mobility of the cancer cells, Rao said.

Research aimed at finding the active compounds in green tea revealed that its protective effects are due chiefly to catechins. Powerful polyphenolic antioxidants, catechins are astringent, water-soluble compounds that can be easily oxidized. They are a subgroup of flavonoids, weak phytoestrogenic compounds widely available in vegetables, fruit, tea, coffee, chocolate and wine. The antioxidant potential of both green and black teas, as measured by the Phenol Antioxidant Index, was found to be significantly higher than that of grape juice and red wines.

Yes, as I stated I have never felt so good. I have been chugging down 6 cups a day though. I was slamming coffee and soda all day at work, more out of boredom at some office job than anything else. Heck so maybe it's just from me not drinking that garbage than the tea but I doubt it.

Intresting stuff Cassin thanks for all the articles!

Your welcome, make sure you give it a go. It was hard dumping coffee and diet soda for a week or so but I am a changed man.

By the way, if anyone has any positive or negative links about green tea to add please post it. I would love to read it.

if you want a good source for green tea try http://www.adagio.com . They have great tasting teas. Here's a good starter set

My favorite Green is their 1812 Gunpowder. Try it you won't be disappointed.
Keep in mind that all the tea is loose so you'll need an infuser like the ingenuiTEA.
When making green tea it's important for the water not to boil of it will make your tea taste bitter. 180 degrees is ideal. It should only steep for 3 minutes tops or again it will be bitter.
180 degrees is just when the teapot starts making a simmer sound.

Decaf green tea is also available for those, like me, who prefer to avoid caffeine. Also, if it's difficult to work 3-5 cups of green tea into your daily routine, there are a number of green tea supplements available, some with caffeine, some decaf.

Whats the low-down on white tea? Is it similar to green tea, or has green tea got different properties to white tea?

A couple of minor comments:

1) There is no evidence at all that drinking green tea as a beverage (or taking green tea extracts in tablet or capsule form) has any systemic effect of 5a-reductase inhibition, with subsequent DHT reduction. Please note that Liang's and Hiipakka's study was almost entirely in vitro; the part about how the rats' internal organs were affected was when EGCG was INJECTED into them in large doses, not given to them in their food or water. The reason for the failure of green tea to inhibit 5a-reductase systemically when taken as a beverage is probably because EGCG is very poorly absorbed from the GI tract. And as I've said many times before, there's still a distinct possibility that TOPICAL applications of green tea (or an extract) could be usefull for controlling hairloss, even if taking it orally as a beverage is not. There are both animal and human tests showing its ability to inhibit 5a-reductase, when applied topically.

2) There is evidence that caffeine may be an important co-factor for at least SOME of the general health benefits that you get from consuming the polyphenols in green tea, so I would use the caffeine-free versions with some degree of caution.

You are correct on both accounts as far as I am aware, what you failed to mention in your first point is the method for the alleged benefits for drinking green tea for hairloss. Green tea combined with another product found in some peoples bodies prodcues a substance called Equol. Equol binds itself to DHT making it unable to connect to the androgen receptors. This in turn keeps the hair in it's original state. If the Equol did not attach itself to the DHT it would bind with the androgen receptor and the bodys immune system would see the hair folicle as a foreign body and attack it producing the result of male pattern baldness.

Note that drinking green tea will not produce equol in everyone furthermore there there is no sufficient evidence that I am aware of which indicates that drinking green tea will produce enough equol to have an effect on male pattern baldness.

While I am sure you feel better cassin. However, i think its more to do with your giving up soda and coffee. Soda is absolutely TERRIBLE for you. Just sugar and caffine. Good job on giving it up! The number of people in the USA with weight problems I think would go down substantially if they gave up this sugar water. :)

Also, if you dont like the taste of green tea (I like it actually), just add some Equal or Splenda. Don't dump sugar into tea, it makes it just like soda.

That's not quite correct. It's a component of SOY, not green tea, which is converted in the gut to equol by certain bacteria which some people have.

Doing a quick Google search on "equol green tea", I did notice a study which seemed to find a higher incidence of equol producers among green tea drinkers, so the authors speculated that maybe green tea consumption enhances that conversion from soy to equol in some way, shape, or fashion.

I'm pretty sure you're wrong about equol binding with androgen receptors. I believe the ONLY known action of equol is to bind with DHT itself, rendering it harmless. I don't think it has any affinity for the androgen receptor, so it's neither an agonist nor an antogonist for that receptor.

BTW, if you want to get essentially the same effect as equol, just use a 5a-reductase inhibitor like finasteride or dutasteride. The results should be the same.
