Just curious how many propecia users out there have made healthy babies. I know pregnant women shouldn't handle the pill, but what about the internal effects from the father's side?
And what about long term risks in regards to conception even after you stop taking propecia. Do they exist? Feel free to share your thoughts or successful baby making stories.

By the way, I stopped propecia about a year and a half ago, now I only use rogaine and I've noticed only minor changes in hair loss. It feels good to be off that stuff.

i used propecia for nearly 8 years with zero sexual side effects. i quit cuz my libido took a huge nose dive in feb'05..thought it may have been propecia catching up to me so i quit taking it
(I later found out it was something else causing my libido issues).

anyway, wife and I just had a healthy baby boy in nov'07...and hopefully he continues to be healthy.

i think passing on defects to your newborn is limited to genes/genetics. so if you have a disease or such or prone to certain illnesses you may pass that onto your offspring. if you issues that were caused by a certain medication than you most likely won't be passing that onto your offspring...especially if you stop taking whatever it is that you were on. women is a different story as whatever goes into the woman during the 9mos is potentially going into the baby as well.

hope that makes sense.

The risk is not gene related. It is about DHT production in the developing male fetus. DHT is important in genital growth, and studies have shown in monkeys that a large does (talking way more than what you take for male pattern baldness or BPH) can cause a birth defect. Although from what I understand, it usually corrects itself during puberty.

Congratulations on the son!

So what you should ask is frankly, does the boy have a nice penis?

FDA says no... although the mother to be should avoid handling propecia, especially cut/crushed.

As for the finasteride finding it's way in via semen:

"Thus, based on a 5-mL ejaculate volume, the amount of finasteride in semen was estimated to be 50- to 100-fold less than the dose of finasteride (5 ?g) that had no effect on circulating DHT levels in men (see also PRECAUTIONS, Pregnancy)."

Thanks! Yes, the boy has a normal penis (circumsized) and two testes that were fully descended!
