Propecia and Hairlines

I am thinking about starting propecia. My father went bald young, and in recent months I've been noticing very slight thinning of my hairline/temples. If it gets any worse I will consider starting propecia. My only concern is that it will make my hairline and shed, and since this area is so sensitive I won't grow much hair back there. Doesn't anybody know the answer to this?? Can propecia make your hairline and temples a little worse? I know, I know....everyone's hair will react differently, but isn't their a general concensus?? All I want to know is simply....What are the chances that propecia will end up hurting my hairline/temples? This is really the only area of my hair which feels different in recent months.

research shows yes that propecia does cause a bit of shedding so within the first 3months of treatment you are likely to lose a bit of density.

but it doesn't it usually grow back thicker and fuller, or is this the case everywhere with exception to the hairline/temples ?

after a shed the hair should come back thicker and fuller .
it's been discussed here . propecia dosent hurt your hairline but somtimes it dosent help it too so the balding process continues on the hairline .

you can see my regimen on the regimen box .
i had a shed from minoxidil but it was a really minor shed . and dutas didnt make me shed or at least not a noticeable one . basically i'm relying on what i read here and other places and what i wrote in the other post is what most people here would tell you .

I've read that shedding doesn't always occur and that many patients wont experience it. I experienced a short-lived shed when I began mioxn but it was only brief and not extensive or noticeable.

also, I seem to shed alot when I shampoo my hair. Theres usually about 30-35 hairs I find in the tub and on the bathroom floor. I know they say the average person loses about 100 hairs in a day, but where are they? Never in my life have I ever noticed so much hair in the tub, I dont think I've payed as close attention...but still I've never noticed this much. Is losing this much hair in the shower normal? Does it happen to others that are not balding? I share my shower with a woman who washes her hair all the time, if there were 30 hairs of hers in the tub it would be overwhelming and I would definitely notice, and theres not....she usually sheds about 10 hairs it seems like. Whats going on? Is this due to balding or is this normal?

is the shedding noticeable to others, or just yourself

thats going to depend entirely on how bad your hairloss is, how much shedding you get & where on your head the hairloss is.

I shed the most amt of hair at the age of 21-22. I can't remember a time when my hair fell out at a faster rate. I was on generic minoxidil and the texture of my hair was completely shot as well.

With minoxidil, supplemented shampoo, and finasteride I honestly don't see too much hairfall on my pillow, but I will notice a few hairs on my hands when I shampoo. I will let you know if I shed as I inrease my propecia dosage over the course of the next month. Those side effects scared the living sh*t out of me... so I'm taking it slow haha.

well my hairloss has become more noticable- dont know if its the finasteride or minoxidil doing it. & yes my hair texture has turned into straw & its the minoxidil doing that.

how long have you been on finasteride? finasteride doesn;t stop your hairloss completely, it will still recede, just much slower....although I'm sure your aware of that. So are you saying that finasteride may be responsible for your increases hair loss? What do you think.

well my hair has been shedding over the last few weeks so yes hairloss has increased but is expected to grow back thicker & stronger. the sooner the better I say. in order for your hair to grow back stronger the affected hairs MUST fall out. thats the hardest part of finasteride & minoxidil. research shows that hair density in the affected regions do decrease in the first 3months. (ive been on finasteride just over 2months & 3weeks of minoxidil)

a lot of guys get scared by this & stop treatment & inevitably go on to lose their hair. finasteride has different affects on some ppl- some ppl maintain what they have, some grow a bit back, some it merely slows down the loss. it will be a long time before i can even guess what category im under. knowing my luck id probably the last one.

when i started finasteride/dutasteride/minoxidil my hairline was perfect (started thinning though) and in the first week i noticed a chunk of my hairline dissapear! this did freak me out but that chunk has filled in since and is thickening up... infact all my hair are thickening....

my advice- get on the big 3/4 and no matter what happens (unless its serious side effects) ride it out for at least 3-6 months... my hair actually got worse the first 2 and half months and then boom - hair all over the place... anyway my hair are far from perfect at the moment so lots of work still needs to be done...

yeah I guess its a case of riding it out & having to make do with a fringe. atleast the hairs ive been losing appear to be thin & wispy- so thats bad hairs.

Come on bubka, you've been in this side long enough to know that a shed is LIKELY...

The fact is that a normal person sheds anything between 50 and 100 hairs a day. What we are talking about here is a finasteride/minoxidil induced shed. I had a bit of a shed, but I don't know what caused it. I think I had both minoxidil and finasteride shed, both minor. I think my hair line is worse than it was 2 months ago, but I can see that it's improving.

I'm sick of this f*****g myth.

ACTUALLY, finasteride usually DOES reverse hairloss at the vertex and anterior mid-scalp regions. At the 5-year mark, the average male in the propecia merck study had an INCREASE in haircount over the baseline, although it was showing signs of decline when compared to the 2-year peak.

SO YES, I AM SAYING THAT PROPECIA CAN AND DOES CAUSE PATIENTS' FOLLICLES TO REGENERATE HAIR SHAFTS IF THEY ARE STILL ACTIVE. YES YES YES!!!! Propecia, all by itself (well, and T-Gel in the Merck study), cause regrowth that is maintained, in part, over the course of a five year study.
