i really wanna start using proscar, but am a bit conerned about the initial shedding stage.
im only on minoxdil and have quite bad thinning all over plus i use toppik everyday. im worried that proscar may make my hair at the front of my hairline (that doesnt grow much) fall out and never return, as i heard only 'strong hairs' regrow.
any reassurance, guifance would be appreciated

you gotta think long term man. its like braces, why get them, they will make your teeth look like sh*t and metal mouthed for a year or so? why because you will have a great smile for life. same thing with proscar/propecia, the idea is the shedding ones will come in thicker and here's the key "would have fallen out very soon anyway." and some people don't even get the shed, so you might not. i really didn't have a big one or anything, but a general slowing of hairloss which has been very gradual.

According to branco from Poland:

"propecia (also know as prascar) can prassably make man into lady (homsexual)"

I would talk to your folicles. Try to reason with them. See if you cant convince them to be more civilized. I am sure they will listen to reason.
The only reason that someone on finasteride would shed hairs and then nver grow them back is if they shed--the user panics--and then quits finasteride after some ridiculas amount of time like 3 months "because it made them shed like crazy". Someone who is going bald and isnt doing anything about it is sheding like crazy anyway. Finasteride begins to work slowly (taking 3 months to slow hair loss, 6 months to be stoping hair loss and 9 months before regowth can be seen). This means that part of your shed is going to happen after 1 month and the rest will be spread over a whole year, so I cant seen how it would be a large, all at once shed. I liked trents analogy. We would all like perfect, quick cures with no side effects but we dont live in magical fairy land.
On the bright side, if you start treating it right now and hit it hard, you have a good chance of regrowing a lot of hair. Oh, BTW, I have frontal hairloss and I have been able to grow it all back. But I hit it hard. I shed just slightly on minoxidil and I didnt notice any sheding with proscar 1/4. And the thing about only stong hairs regrowing is probablly just panicky reactionary people's minds palying tricks on them.

mcensie, understand that almost all treaments with hairloss result in your hair getting worse before it gets better. However, understand that most sheds resulting from propecia (proscar) are not noticible to others around you. I wouldn't worry too much, and if you do, there are many effective concealers that are availble today to hide thinning.
