Need advice

Hi, I've been on Rogaine 2% for 2 years now and within the past 5 months I have noticed a substantial amount of hair loss. I've noticed alot more falling out when I shower and when I style my hair in the morning. I've noticed more scalp showing and just all over thinning. I decided to go to a dermatologist as I decided to go on Rogaine myself since my mother has extremely thin hair and knew the same would happen to me. My dermatologist took blood tests (iron, thyroid, hormone levels, ANA) and they all came back normal. She really didn't have any other answers for me. I haven't noticed much difference with Rogaine until recently when it seems like it's making the situation worse. I'm wondering what I should do next. Should I try to find a specialist who can prescribe something else or should I try Rogaine 5%? I've been on Birth Control Pills (Tri-Levlen) for about 4 years now as well. Would this have any affect on my hair loss. Is it causing more hair loss? I mean I can go off the BCP if necessary but they always say you lose more hair when you discontinue the BCP so Im' afraid to do that. There is a substantial amount of information on this website and I find it overwhelming. I'm becoming obsessed with my hairloss as of late and am depressed. I'm about to move to another city in about a month and I'm wondering if I should wait until I move to find a doctor or am I just wasting time by waiting? Please help. I just need direction in trying to stop this from happening any further. Thanks.

Hi Ashley,

I can relate to where you are at...it can feel so hopeless.

I am a 25 years old, female who has been dealing with Androgenetic Alopecia for over 2 years (and it feels like forever.) It is hard for me when I see pictures of myself from just a few years ago. I look so different and my self esteem has suffered.

I went to several doctors and dermatologists which all pushed Rogaine with no other advice or help to offer. I learned that I had to be very proactive about my hairloss problem. I have never used Rogaine before because I was afraid that once I started, I would be using it for life. However, with the help of this website and hours of research, I am using different treatments. Tricomin has been the only one that has helped cut the number of hairs I lose a day in half. I totally recommend it as it has been so beneficial in my hairloss fight. (maybe for you too?)

I was on Trivora (birth control) for 3 years and was advised to go off of it last year to see what would happen to my hair. I did not lose a lot (no major shed like I feared) but I noticed more wirey, kinky hairs popping off while I was off the pill (DHT working its way on my follicles). I think I did not have the extra estrogen to help block the DHT. Anyhow, I went to an endocrinologist who recommended I try Yasmin (it is a new type of birth control pill on the market). I had never heard of it before...he said it is a unique kind of pill that could possibly help with my DHT/hairloss because it is an anti-androgen and a birth control pill. I have been on it for 3 months and have not felt as good in a long time. It may be something you will want to research and talk to your doctor about to see if it is right for you.

So for now, I would order some Tricomin to add to your hair regimen (if you don't have it already) and once you move, make an appointment to talk to your doctor about the possibility of Yasmin. Just a thought (from what I have experienced.)

Keep in touch!

Good luck,
Nay

Ashley:
Wait to see a dermotologist at your home area. As far as further therapy goes, some females do better on Spironolactone added to the Rogaine. The BCPs can certainly cause loss as well and if you can use other methods perhaps that would be best. The comments from Nay may be worth while also.
