So I've been off finasteride for about 2-3 weeks (after being on it for 4 mos - Proscar cut in 5ths ordered online) and I'm starting to get a little nervous because I think I'm going through a minor shed. I think I might want to go back on the finasteride but I wanted my docs opinion this time around b/c the last time I just ordered some online at midnight some night I was depressed. FYI, I actually think I've felt my body go "back to normal" since I've been off it but that is another topic for another time. For some reason I just wanted my docs reassurance that taking an internal hormone regulator was cool for me. So I called the office today.

Stryker: "This is styker can, I talk to Dr XXXX I just have a question I don't really need an appt for this"

Dumass receptionist: "whats this about"

S: "Just have a question for the doctor thats all, I've been his patient for years"

D: "Can I ask him for you"

S: "I'd rather just talk to him, its personal man stuff thats all"

D: "I'll have him call you back when he gets done with his patient"

S: "Thanks"

So ten minutes later some other dumass lady calls me back

D: "What can I do for you Mr. Stryker"

S: "Uh I just had a quick ques..."

D: "Yes I know but if you tell me I'll rely the question and call you back, the doctor is very busy today"

S: "Well, no offense to you but I'm not sure if you'll be familar with what I'm asking and my question won't survive the relay"

D: "I'll take down exactly what you say I promise"

S: "Ok I guess, here it goes. I having issues with my progressing male pattern baldness. I've been diffuse thinning on the top and receding on the sides for close to two years. Six months ago I began a treatment that has consisted of twice daily applications of 5% minoxidil and Nizoral shampoo 3x a week. I need a DHT inhitor though b/c while the minoxidil will help with regrowth, I need something to maintain what I already have. My question is I want to know the Docs opinion of me on finasteride or if he knows or thinks highly of any topical Dht inhibitors"

D: "finasta...what"

S: "Propecia is the merck drug name for what is 1mg of finasteride. There is also a 5mg finasteride but that is called Proscar and is mainly used to treat prostate cancer."

D: "So you want me to ask if you can have a script for Proscar?

S: "I don't think he would write me a script for proscar since I don't have prostate cancer"

D: "Okay"

S: "I just want to know his opinion of the affects of the drug on my body or if he recommends any other DHT inhitors"
S: "Besides if I wanted Proscar I could just order it online from India"

D: "India..?"

S: "Nevermind, can you just ask him that question for me?

D: "Yeah"

calls back 10 minutes later

D: "The doctor recommends you get an OTC product called "Rogaine" and for you to not buy anything from India"

S: (sigh) "Thanks for that, I'll just call back and make an appt"

I talked to my physician about propecia when I came in. She had no clue what finasteride was.

It just drives me crazy... why don't people take this more seriously.

I have a headache.. I'm going to bed.

Trying to ask the Doctor about treatment options was a mistake. Especially since hes not even a specialist. Asking him about your hormones, tho, is a good idea. You can get your levels checked to make sure everything is normal, then you know its safe to start finasteride, and you can get them checked a few months in to make sure everything is still a-ok.

LOL

Yes, I can imagine.

When she said "not to buy anything from India" you should of said, "Does that include an Elephant?!?"

Then slammed the phone down.

Jesus! I'm not sexist at all, but woman are fecking useless when it comes to customer service via a phone. This past week I have become so frustrated with their iditioc ways when all you want something quite simple.

This week, I phoned up for info on a new computer I'm buying which is state of the art 3.2ghz and is over £2,000.

Well, I phoned up with a list of questions, and this dopey Irish woman picks up the phone. She couldn't understand the faqct I would want information and assurance over the whole situation. It was like "Help, what's that mean then?!" - not that she said that, but she came across that way. The customer service was just a joke.

After realising I was also phoning Ireland, I asked about "calling a company in England!" She then suggested I was being racist buy saying in a clever tone "Would you prefer to talk to an English person"

At this point I was more or less banging my head against a brick wall.

All I wanted was answers to my simple questions, as I was spending over £2,000 etc.

Anyway, It's a wonder why alot of these dopey woman get employed. I'm sure the only reason they are employed is because of their looks. 'Just sit there and look pretty' etc

Another one I had this week.

I phoned my internet provider asking simple questions on payment.

Well, the stupid thick b**ch, kept putting me on hold.

The she comes back and says "You can't do it that way" And advises me to do some over sh!t.

Anyway, I called them back, getting a man answer this time Well, FINALLY someone knows what he is talking about, and I get my query sorted with no problem.

Says it all.

Stryker you know more about treatments than your doctor does, especially the topicals. Try not to set yourself up for dissapointment by going in there expecting to come out armed with any info about Xandrox, spironolactone or even something as common as Nizoral for male pattern baldness.

yeah, I wasn't really looking for treatment advice, although Doctor is a middle aged man with a receding hairline so I did think there might have been a shot in the dark he was either on propecia himself or at least had an opinion on something.

Since he's been my doctor for awhile and knows my medical history and such, I was more looking for him to say, go ahead, your body/ hormones will be fine if your on propecia.

But theres no way in hell I can afford propecia from a script being a grad student.

QUESTION:
That said, when I do go into his office and talk about the effects on hormones and such, when he goes to write me a script for propecia, do I say, "No thanks I don't need that, I'm gonna get some Proscar from Keywestpharmacy online and cut it in fifths."?

Just tell him that you're going to get it via Canada. It is common knowledge amongst docs that their drugs are cheaper. Screw those pharma companies that are trying to to gouge Americans. I'm sick of paying up all the marketing and R&D costs for sh*t the rest of the world gets much cheaper at generic-competitive cost.
