Is gynecomastia caused by low DHT or high estrogen?

Just wondering.

Especially while taking finasteride: Does Gynecomastia (or simple breast enlargment) occur because of the high estrogen or the low DHT?

Let's say someone lowers dht while Testosterone and estrogen stay completely the same (doesn't matter if it's possible or not), could gynecomastia occur?

When using finasteride, gynecomastia is caused by elevated estrogen level, due to lowered DHT level, so it's both, but it's estrogen which makes the breasts grow.

I am not sure that lowering DHT necessarily means increasing estrogen levels.

Not necessarily, but in many cases, it does. DHT counteracts estrogen and its effects. I think estrogen level is more likely to increase if you're overweight, as fat cells aromatize testosterone to estrogen. Simply not enough DHT to counteract.
