How long until total hair loss?

My 6 year old son lost his first little patch of hair around February. He now has 3 or 4 pathes - it really does seem as though they appear overnight. My question is: is there a way to know whether he'll lose all of his hair? Does that happen much faster than the patches or is there still a chance he could lose it all? Thank you.

My daughter who is nine had 2 patches in November and it pretty much stayed that way, Mother's Day of this year she had alot of hair a few patches, 6 weeks later all hair is gone....
