do hats and wool caps always contribute to hair loss? Or just when used very often?

nah man, wearing a hat won't make a man go bald. you might lose 2 more hairs every now and then but if you're gunna go bald, it's down to your genes and not your clothes.

the only way hats could ever cause hair loss is if you're wearing an exceptionally tight one and it causes traction alopecia. (Even so, most of the time the hair just gets "rubbed" off and grows back anyhow).
In this case the hairloss would be only where the hair gets "pulled" out by the hat - it wouldn't be on the scalp. If you're losing hair on the scalp and your horseshoe/donor area isn't losing hair, then it's male pattern baldness, which is caused by your genes and nothing but.
