I stumbled upon the following study a few days ago. It is very interesting. Here it is:

Flax Lignans: New Study Says It Is A Cure for Hair Loss
May, 10, 2005
For many men, loosing their hair is a frustrating but inevitable part of the aging process. But a pilot study carried out by Dutch ingredients company Acatris demonstrates that taking flax lignans could put an end to their plight.
Technical specialist Jocelyn Mathern explained to Young Again that androgenetic alopecia, the most common from of hair loss, is a hormonal as well as a genetic issue. It affects 50 percent of 50 year-old men.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a potent form of the male hormone testosterone, can get inside hair follicles and make them shrink so that they produce thinner hair and eventually none at all, she said. Secoisolariciresinol diglucoside (SDG), the main flax lignan, can help prevent this by inhibiting production of the enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, called 5-alpha reductase.

The study took place at a health company in Taiwan over a six-month period. Ten male sufferers of androgenetic alopecia aged between 20- and 70- years received a 50mg daily dose of SDG in the form of one 250 mg capsule of Acatris’ LinumLife Extra.

The condition of their hair was documented at the beginning of the study by photographs and the men measured their hair loss throughout the period by counting the number of hairs on their pillows each morning.

Initial effects of the flax lignans were noticed on average one to two months into the study, says the company, and the end of the period, eight of the participants reported a modest improvement in their hair loss condition, one reported a great improvement and one reported no effect at all. The more severe the participant’s hair loss condition at the start of the trial, the more noticeable the improvement.

Half the subjects also noted decreased oil secretion in their scalp. No adverse effects were reported.

“This pilot study confirms earlier research on flax lignans with respect to their promise in the care of Androgenetic Alopecia and without the sometimes harmful effects of a prescription medication,†said Mathern.

“In addition to benefits for hormone related conditions, such as hair loss, lignans have long been reported to help improve prostate health, reduce menopausal symptoms, promote heart health and have benefits for breast health.â€

The pilot study’s results mean Acatris is going ahead with sponsoring a clinical trial at a research center in Maastricht, The Netherlands, this year.

In this case 100mg SDG will be used, which may give an indication of whether the lignan’s effects on hair loss are commensurate with dose.

As well as androgenetic alopecia, participants selected for this trial will have an inflamed prostate. The researchers will also measure the flax lignans’ effects on this health condition

At first, I was skeptical of this study. Isn't this just a marketing ploy? This company just wants to sell more of its product so it touts it as a cure for baldness by packaging it as a study. However, I did some internet research. I found the following recent study. Duke reseachers discovered that eating ground flaxseed daily can prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Fifteen men who supplemented with flaxseed for 6 months experienced a 31 % reduction in prostate-specific antigen levels, a marker for BPH. Wendy Demark-Wahnefriend, Ph.D. the lead researcher, stated that flaxseed is the richest source of dietary lignans.

After reading the Duke University study, there may be something to flax lignans and hair health. The same hormonal mechanism is at work for BPH and male pattern baldness. The active ingredient in Propecia-finasteride- is the same ingredient in Proscar which is used to treat BPH. Thus, any substance which would work for BPH should also work for male pattern baldness. I am going to give flax lignans a try. I already ordered a bottle. I got a 2 month supply of Jarrow's Flax Essence for $12.71. This product contains the same percentage of lignans that were used in the study. I figure I don't have anything to lose. Plus, over the past couple of years I have heard a lot about the health benefits of flaxseed oil supplements. This product is just one type of flaxseed oil supplement. I am currently taking Propecia with pretty good results and I am hoping the addition of this flax lignan supplement will really boost my results.

What do you guys think.

Been posted before. Anyway, I will restate, If you test *any* drug on a sample as small as ten people you will get laughed at by the scientific community. Its just not enough.

Flaxseed meal can be a great source of fiber and antioxidants, both of which are very good for health. Flax seed oil or flaxseed meal can be purchased at very low prices at places such as Costco, Trader Joes etc. I dont know if faxseed oil will do anything for hair, but it will improve your general health.

LOL ... i love these studies. Six months. Hair cycles into and out of growth for every human being on the planet. This means hair counts will go up or go down in a 6 month period, no matter what. For everyone. All the time.

A study done for only 3 or 6 months therefore is useless. It means nothing.

A 5 year old would show a change in hair count if you gave him popsicles once a day for 6 months too.

This is why legit studies for hair loss are done for a minimum of 1 year. And in way more than 10 people.

Lignans interfering with 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone binding to human sex hormone-binding globulin.

Schottner M, Spiteller G, Gansser D.

Lehrstuhl fur organische Chemie, Universitat Bayreuth, Germany.

The natural lignans (-)-3,4-divanillyltetrahydrofuran (1), (-)-matairesinol (2), (-)-secoisolariciresinol (3), (+/-)-enterolactone (4), (+/-)-enterodiol (5), and nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) (6) reduce the binding of 3H-labeled 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to human sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). (-)-3,4-Divanillyltetrahydrofuran (1) has the highest binding affinity (Ka = 3.2 +/- 1.7 x 10(6)M-1) of all lignans investigated so far; the reversibility of its binding and a double reciprocal plot suggest a competitive inhibition of the SHBG-DHT interaction. Increasing hydrophobity in the aliphatic part of the lignans (butane-1,4-diol-butanolide-tetrahydrofuran structures) leads to higher binding affinity. In the aromatic part, a 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy substitution pattern is most effective for binding to SHBG.

Inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase in genital skin fibroblasts and prostate tissue by dietary lignans and isoflavonoids.

Evans BA, Griffiths K, Morton MS.

Department of Child Health, University of Wales College of Medicine, Health Park, Cardiff, UK.

Isoflavonoids and lignans, constituents of many plant foods, have been proposed as protective agents in those populations with a low incidence of hormone-dependent cancers. They may act by their inhibition of the metabolism of growth-promoting steroid hormones. This report describes the inhibition of 5 alpha-reductase and 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase by six isoflavonoids and two lignans in human genital skin fibroblast monolayers and homogenates, and in benign prostatic hyperplasia tissue homogenates. In genital skin fibroblasts, genistein, biochanin A and equol were the most potent inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase activity, each resulting in greater than 80% inhibition at a concentration of 100 microM. The IC50 values for genistein and a seven-compound mixture were approximately 35 microM and 20 microM (2.9 microM of each compound) respectively. Of the lignans, enterolactone was the most potent inhibitor. Inhibition by biochanin A was shown to be reversible. When genital skin fibroblast homogenates were used, biochanin A was found to inhibit 5 alpha-reductase isozymes 1 and 2 to differing extents (30% and 75% respectively). Genistein was shown to inhibit 5 alpha-reductase 2 in a non-competitive nature (Vmax and Km values without and with inhibitor were 30 and 20 pmol/mg protein per h and 177 and 170 nM respectively). All of the compounds tested inhibited 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in genital skin fibroblast monolayers. When prostate tissue homogenates were used, the compounds tested were better inhibitors of 5 alpha-reductase 1 than 2.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Both quite impressive sounding articles, but I would point out that these claims are roughly the same that are mad for Saw Palmetto, which is recognised as fairly useless by most people. An in vivo study would be nice :)

I doubt something that comes from mother nature is going to be the cure for hairloss... sorry to get your hopes up!

So - has anyone seen the results from the study on 100 mg SDG? I can't find the study.

Yeah I used to take these, I think they help to take the edge of estrogen and testosterone levels (a bit like SHBG does), but I'm not sure what else they do o_O

I didn't know they inhibited 5ar... I doubt it's going to be particularly strong at doing it though.

The full paper doesn't seem to be available, but there's this old press release that describes the study:

Over a six-month period, 10 men, between the ages of 20 and 70 and in varying stages of Androgenetic Alopecia, consumed one 250 mg capsule of LinumLife EXTRA. Photographs were used to document hair loss conditions at the beginning of the study. At the end of the test period, eight men reported modest improvement of their hair loss condition, one reported much improvement and one subject reported no effect. Initial effects were noticed, on average, within one to two months of starting supplementation with flax lignans and no side effects were reported. Throughout the study, the daily number of hairs lost decreased and 50 percent of subjects noticed a decrease in oil secretion in their scalp. More noticeable improvements were noted in subjects with more severe conditions of Androgenetic Alopecia.

And this:

The men in the study received a daily dose of 1 gram of LinumLife, equivalent to 40 mg of SDG. Their serum END and ENL levels were measured at baseline, three months and six months. At baseline, their average levels were 115 nmol/L. At three months they had increased 25% to 145 nmol/L, and at six months were around 136 nmol/L.

40 mg is not so much -- you can easily get it from ground flax seeds:

In the study linked to above, the participants were given 0.3 grams of flax seeds per kg body weight. For a 70 kg person, this would mean 21 grams (or 3 tablespoons) and 210-630 mg of SDG. After 10 days of consuming ground flax seed, enterodiol and enterolactone levels increased from 1.9 to 103 nmol/L and from 9.5 to 167 nmol/L, respectively. That's a much greater increase than what was seen in the LinumLife study. There was no significant difference between men and women.

The authors also report that steady-state plateau concentrations of enterolactone and enterodiol are reached when the supplemental interval is less than ~17 hours. In other words, if you want to keep enterolignan levels high, you should consume ground flax seeds twice per day with at least 7 hours in between.

And yet you posted a thread which claimed flaxseed cured your hair loss
