Finasteride / Propecia

I am considering starting with these, as suggested on this forum, so I have a few questions. These may be answered elsewhere, but I couldn't find the responses. I also thought it would be good to have all explanations on the same spot.

1) Is it true that finasteride is same as propecia? If so, is there any preference? Is there any brand that's supposed to be best?
2) Do I need doctor's perscription/check up to get these? Do I go to a general doctor or dermatologist, or something else?
3) How frequent, severe and permanent are the side effects? In other words, what fraction of users see side effects? How serious they are? Do they go away if the user stops taking them?
4) How effective it is? Does it only stop hair loss, or also promotes hair regrowth?

Thank you very much in advance.

You can easily find the answers you are looking for by typing them into google.

1) Yes, finasteride is cheaper as its the generic version thats why most prefer it over brand name
2) Yes/No you can get a script from a GP which is unlikely, dermatologist/hair transplant surgeon you are more likely. You don't need a script if you get it online.
3) I think sides are somewhat common, just from all the success stories I've read here and elsewhere, but most if not all say they disappear after some time or after stopping finasteride. Persistent sides are low, but I do believe it is a possibility.
4) Some get regrowth not all. Really varies on the individual and how well they respond. If you get stabilization thats considered a success, if you get regrowth on top of that its a bonus.
