No. I still have to do some more research on transplants. It hasn't been a focus of mine since it wasn't really an option for me until recently.

What changed suddenly that makes them an option for you now?

Sadly, I've been doing my research and my uncle, who only has crown baldness but an intact hairline, was told by Dr. Bernstein in NY that he doesn't have enough quality donor hair for a good transplant. I was shocked because he wouldn't even need that much donor hair. Maybe 2,000 grafts tops. But that means my hopes are even worse considering I'm basically a full Norwood 6. There's only stifled wispy stuff on the top of my head anymore. I would need 10,000+ grafts probably so I guess there is literally zero option for me until cloning.

I'm about to email Dr. Wesley in NYC with a consultation to see what he recommends to help decrease my horseshoe ring pattern, which is the real cause of my distress and confidence issues. It's not so much the lack of hair overall. I'm lucky that my head shape isn't too bad and I'm otherwise not bad looking. But the contrast between the top vs. back/sides of my head makes it look like I'm a dying person or some zombie. It is awful and I can't get rid of it currently. If I could somehow smooth over that horseshoe pattern and get some hair on top, even if it's not thick and looks like diffuse loss that is just not as bad, I'd be happy. My other uncle, for example, has this. His entire head hair has thinned, back and sides included, so it looks fine because it's all the same. There's no horrific looking horseshoe ring.

I've been told that finasteride, which I've never taken due to fear, may regrow hair decently for me because I'm still very young and my hair loss is recent. So lately I've been thinking about giving it a go. But I would still hate to have to commit to that long term then. Just need f*****g cloning so we can be fixed all at once and not have to think about this sh*t again.

It’s interesting, there are a couple of reddit threads about Dr. Zarev that Dr. Rassman (guy who pioneered FUE) comments on. He thinks very highly of Dr. Zarev but also shares some words of caution about managing expectations:

“To get 14000 grafts from the donor area without causing significant depletion and a see-through look, you would have to have a coarser hair with high density, a rare combination of metrics. I saw his presentation in Europe and the patients who had these high number of grafts has (1) very high donor densities and (2) he harvested outside of the permanent zone which means that some of these hairs are subject to apoptosis (death from genetics) something I do not do. There are some doctors who believe that since the Class 7 pattern is rare (about 7% of the population) most advanced balding men will end up as a Class 6 pattern. Under that assumption, harvesting the donor area of a Class 6 pattern of balding yields easily 60% more grafts. If the doctor is wrong, and these patients fall into that 7% group, then the 60% of the hairs that were transplanted will fall die and fall out. Being conservative, I don't go beyond the Class 7 donor area and that is why for advanced balding patients I generally recommend Strip (FUT) surgeries rather than FUE surgeries. By the way, I coined the term FUE and published it with the first paper ever on the subject which you can read here: https://newhair.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/mp-2002-fue.pdf

William Rassman, M.D.”

If I'm not mistaken, all the results on Zarev's website are with scalp donor only.

Except this one, where he seems to have good results with chest hair (6050 grafts!): https://www.instagram.com/p/B0-3IjlHsUJ/. He can probably do well with beard donor too.

If you replace harvesting from the NW7 area with using beard and chest hair, and you're okay with having short hair (due to the use of chest hair), this might be a cure without using finasteride or worrying about hairs harvested from the NW7 area falling out?

If I was a Norwood 7 I would certainly give it a shot, nothing to lose and it beats being a cueball. If it fails I would just continue shaving my head like I was doing anyway.

The pics on his Instagram page are too good to be true, over 10k grafts from the donor and it looks like 2-3k grafts. Perfect hair line back and a NW6 looks like he never had surgery or hair loss at all??? like really?

At the end of the day he only has a method for an optimized transplantation rate, which means that he could be bettering the results of the other top surgeons by like 5% or something as their transplanted hair regrowth rate is already around or a little above 90 %. I don't see how it could translate into such a différence in visual result.

Hope this is real though but hard to believe.

I don’t know why people are debating if it’s real or not. It is clearly real. If it is fake then you are suggesting that the photos are altered... which they are not as he shows videos of him combing the hair back and blow drying it.

If they were fake, he wouldn’t get notoriety from the top surgeons in the world. They are not fake, period.

With that being said, and taking into account Dr. Rassman comments... you need thick hair and high donor density in order to receive results like that. A rare combination.

Wish he'd share some pics of patients with lighter hair. I have medium brown hair and medium thickness but all these results basically just show people with dark brown or black hair. I did see he replied to a comment on Instagram and said he has had patients with lighter hair, but hasn't seemed to share any of them this far.

Dr Zarev said:
“I have never sought out loud popularity through the operations I perform classified as FUE Super Giga Sessions. Such operations are only part of my practice. I would also like to clarify that the self-serving, ill-considered and unjustified pursuit of operations with such a volume can be extremely dangerous and harm patients irreversibly. For the past few months, I have received daily inquiries from patients wishing for such an operation. For most of them, even from the low-quality photos they send, it is clear that they do not have enough resources in donor areas for an operation of this size.

The planning of operations with such a volume can be done only through personal consultation and precise and in-depth analysis of the donor and recipient areas. It is also extremely important to predict future losses, in cases where the baldness process is still in progress. I hope that the results I am showing do not give rise to vain hopes in many patients from which unscrupulous practices will take advantage of. Such scenarios can only lead to a lot of frustration. The operations I have performed in excess of 10,000 grafts are a result of in-depth preliminary analysis, meticulous execution and of course extraction technology, outside the general standards.

At the upcoming GHLS 2020 virtual conference, I will show a detailed video of one of my two-day operations. The video shows all stages of a patient’s first operation, in which the surgical plan includes the transplantation of a total of 11,500 grafts. And I want to clarify that in my practice, nurses do not have direct contact with the patient during the operation. I always perform personally all manipulations on the scalp, both in the process of extraction and in the process of implantation.”

Do you think he's photoshopping/doctoring photos?

Just because you have seen certain types of FUE scars from other doctors, why would you expect that to be the only possible outcome?

Why do you think one "must" have visible scarring/cratering in the donor area?

Many people at one point thought that FUT "must" be done, and that it was the only viable approach. Dealing with absolutes like this, especially in science and technology, is a nebulous rock to stand on.

Either he is lying, or the novel tools and methodology he is employing allow him to obtain a different result than the doctors who do not use such tools and methods.

If he is lying, that would be a pretty elaborate lie and conspiracy to peddle, especially at a conference amongst other surgeons who could easily call him out if they suspected as much.

Nevertheless, I agree that more patient accounts via online forums or other mediums are needed.

I didnt say scarring, i mean the doner hair being depleted, this is not something that we can get around. Unfortunetly the hairloss industry is mostly based around lies and so yeah you see them left right and centre I dont believe its legitimate if its been out for a while, everyone is looking for the best surgeons out there and just happened to have missed the magical man who can take double the amount of grafts as everyone else but have the doner not look one bit thinner then before it was taken out... its sadly just not possible!

You typed a lot to pretty much say you think he is lying then.

I also tried to find evidence from the photos page that they were altered, but failed to do so. What proof do you notice?

Remember, hair does not appear to be thinning until it is reduced 50% or so. Keep that in mind when you observe the donor extraction surface area.

I wonder if he could do higher hair lines in exchange for not going outside of safe zone

It's real. Apparently a lot of FUE surgeons are able to match FUT survival rates now. This particular one does that, and goes outside of the safe zone when selecting grafts. If you read the whole thread you'd know that. As with any surgeon you get the best results if you have thick and dense, dark hair in your donor region. Light skin is also optimal for minimizing the appearance of scarring.

I indeed missed the passage about harvesting outside the safe zone. Still those results are puzzling. Glad that they seem to be real. Experience feedbacks from patients will appear on forums sometime hopefully.

He answered my email. Said that looking at my pictures, I have enough donor to achieve full visual density. I'm Norwood 5 right now...
