Hi guys,

I'm reading a lot of posts on this forum since 2 years and I'm now asking for some advice.
I'm currently 24y old.

My hairloss started when I was 18/19y old, first I saw my temples receding and then a diffuse hair loss.
I think it's relevant to say that I have severe acne problems since I'm 14 (shoulders, back, neck). I took two treatments (8 months) of accutane : at 14 and then at 17.
It stopped my acne and my hair was much more healthy (less oily), for some years.
It came back when I was 21 and I still have a lot of acne in the back of my head, under my hairs.

At 22, I began to saw my scalp with my hairs wet. I decided to do something so I went to a specialist.
I already read a lot of posts here and I asked him Dutasteride right away because I was afraid and constently losing hairs, I saw here it was the most effective.
He said that I had oily sclap and seborrhoeic dermatitis because he saw a few white/yellow dandruffs on my scalp.

So, September 2014, I started taking 0,5mg Dutasteride (Avodart) daily.
Few weeks after, a massive shed began, I lost 100+ hairs every day. Every time I put my hand in my hairs they fall out.
My hairs became even more greasy.
I took it for almost one year, it never stopped. I lost a lot of density.
Decided to stop Dutasteride in September 2015.

I tried Minoxidil several weeks, my dermatitis got even worse so I stopped.
December 2015, I've been 3 months off Duta => shedding has decreased but still losing some hairs.

So I was wondering, can Finasteride have better results on me ?
I started finasteride, 1mg/daily in December 2015, and the shedding was back.
I added 5mg of Accutane daily, to reduce my oily skin and dermatitis without side effects, my specialist agreed.
I lose a lot of small hairs (is it normal?) and some long hair aswell.

I intend to keep using finasteride for at least 6 months (July 1016), and hope the shedding stops..
I'm going to get my blood tested next month to see my T, DHT,... levels.

What do you think guys ?
Can finasteride has better results than Duta ?
Is it worth to keep taking it despite the bad results of Duta ?
What should I do ?

I can't help to think there is a link between my severe acne (maybe too much T, i'll see next month), the dermatitis and the MBP.
Lowering the Testosterone would be a solution ? Low dose of oral spironolactone ?

Thanks in advance for your feedbacks, I'm pretty much depressed at this point.

PS: apologize for my poor english

Hejhej dude,

Unluckily I can't answer your questions but I am experiencing the same exact things. I m as well 24 and I have been on propecia and duta....but differently from you 2 years ish on propecia and just 5 months on duta...
The weird thing is that on propecia it seemed to be maintaining unluckily i had to get of it cause of several reasons... then i started again but with duta cause I thought i d recover the ground i lost after stopping finasteride. Well the situation worsened a lot..I think in 5 months i lost a whole Norwood level and I m scared it will get worse.

I shed as well short and thick hair(white bulb at the end)...and not many of the long ones which appear thinner. I think this is rather weird

I have as well oily skin lately and scalp itch/pain

Anyway I think finasteride is overall safer in terms of sides and effects. Many on dutasteride lost ground while on find they achieved maintenance.... I m think about switching again to finasteride but I want to stick with dutasteride a lil bit more...hoping the shed will run out

Sounds like you may have gotten Telogen Effluvium from Dutasteride. It will go back to normal. From what I have read, going straight to dutasteride is too much for some peoples systems to handle at first, so making the switch to finasteride seems like a great choice on your behalf. If finasteride works for you, and you some day want to get on dutasteride again, I suggest tapering up to let your system get used to it.

i.e maybe start of with .5mg every 10 days and finasteride the rest for a month or two, then .5mg every 5 days etc...

Let us know how you get on. I got oily skin and scalp itch/pain from finasteride but dropped it ages ago. Would be interested to know if yours go away with continued treatment.

I have exactly the same problem. Ive been on dutasteride for over a year at doses above 0.5mg and finasteride for a year before that, and my hair has all but disappeared. I wonder how this happens as people say its impossible to lose hair on dutasteride, but there is too many people reporting dutasteride hasn't worked for it to be a coincidence. Its a shame as there's not a whole lot left to try

Ill do so dude. I ll give it 3 more months and if I don't see changes or it gets worse I will drop it. Frankly i won't bear this itch/pain if I don't achieve great results..better bald without itch than seeing the situation worsening day after day having this ****ty itch.

Anyway I saw that when I do a lot of sport the itch goes away...now that I can't swim more than twice a week cause of the exam session it gets way worse. I have no die if the 2 things are related..

I've been on combinations of the two for years and years and they never stopped the loss...Have they slowed it down? There's simply no way of knowing if they've made any impact or if I'd be in exactly his situation without the meds.

Diffuse thinner

In the same boat as you. Hair loss started at 24 and I tried minoxidil for a year before adding finasteride and nizoral to the mix. Got fantastic results but noticed a loss in gains at the end of the three year mark.

I am a diffuse thinner and recently switched to generic duasteride 0.5 mg. Prior to switching I had been on finasteride for three years and noticed that there was a certain loss in density. From November to December last year I tried Dutasteride thrice a week for two months and then switched to a every day dose from Jan. Apart from shedding there have been no major sides.

The shedding was pretty severe to the point where my diffuse thinning would be noticeable even when my hair was dry. Took the plunge and buzzed it to a number 1. Social life did take a hit as women at work or elsewhere would remark in a caustic fashion about my shaved head. It is difficult getting used to as I have always been popular among women.

Will give dutasteride some more time to work. It's all immensely depressing as it looks like telogen effluvium where there is a loss in density all over. Even the supposed donor area. :Sigh"

What's your status now, still on Dutasteride?

It's foolish to stop and start a treatment over shedding.

It is well known that male pattern baldness treatments cause shedding before recovery.

Shedding has nothing to do with male pattern baldness. However an effective treatment should involve shedding as the follicles enlarge.

My hair got really bad, the worst during treatment. It took a year before I noticed it stopped. Then another year before new hair grew in.

Consistency is key in treatment.

Yeah I agree with what wolfman is saying. I was shedding for a long time (3 months on finasteride) and almost gave up but right when I was about to I started noticing results so...

So you say when you were taking accutane it reduced the oilyness of your scalp and your hair was better? Interesting, I'm also in the same boat as everyone else.. Been on finasteride for a few years and recently added dutasteride as I've been losing ground. I haven't seen any improvement yet although its only been about 2 months since adding dutasteride, so not nearly enough time to truly evaluate.

Just curious why did you stop taking accutane if it was helping your hair and acne? I know it has a lot of side effects, but are they worse than the sexual sides you can get from finasteride and dutasteride?
