Anyone have any luck without finasteride? Should I start minoxidil without seeing my doctor?

Anyone have any luck without finasteride?

I have a regular yearly doctor visit next month. After that I plan on seeing a derm doctor. Should I start anything now or wait to see what they say?

Based on the forum, everyone says jump into the big 3, but I usually like to start one thing small, than if that doesn't work, do the next step, something stronger, etc.

Don't know my granddad on my mom's side since he passed awhile ago, but my mom said he wasn't bald. My mom use to loose a lot of hair 10 years ago, but her heads always been 100% normal, older sister hairs normal, younger sister is kinda patchy but it's not noticeable, i think I only notice it because I'm conscious with my hair. I don't think we have a history on my Mom's side, but I am almost 99% sure it's male pattern baldness.

Front and hair line I've actually been able to maintain (if not helped regrow a bit) in the past year, but crown has gotten worse so that's why I want to see a doctor now. I use nizoral shampoo, and added oil to my conditioner; but more important, I've just learned to better take care of my hair. I don't comb it as much, especially when i get out of shower or when it's in tangles. I don't towel dry as aggressively. I use to have hair on my pillow but not anymore since these steps.
After I get done shower and up to 1.5 days between shampoos my hairs normal, sure 1-3 hairs fall if I comb, but I think that's normal. But 1.5 days after a shampoo, than it starts getting bad (scalp will be dry, but hair will be oily), so if I comb or use shampoo than quite a bit will fall out. I've learned if I use dry shampoo after 1 day, it helps a lot since the powder adsorbs the oil. I think a lot of hair falls out after 1.5 days is because I have wavy hair and it gets into tangles and light pulls (combing or shampooing) is leading to this. I usually put coconut oil in hair before shower and it's helped loose less hair in shower since it seems to take out the tangles.

From pictures: obvious receding hair line on sides. some patching hair growth up on front sides (not receding though). some hair loss on top (it's not a before and after picture, just depends if my hair wants to be nice and cover up that spot or not depending on the day).

A lot of people see great regrowth with minoxidil, though you have understand it doesn't last forever and only a short-term solution. That's why people use finasteride because of how effective it can be for years, you see 10+ year cases on here and it's amazing.

It is my belief also that minoxidil only hides progressing male pattern baldness with what I call 'Minoxidil hairs' and that is why people suffer so much after minxodil begins to stop working, DHT effect the hairs and the only thing that is keeping them there is the minoxidil....

Previous poster is correct. Minoxidil won't save your hair, it will only provide a temporary cover-up. Minoxidil is simply a growth stimulant and it has absolutely no effect at all on DHT levels or DHT activity. All the while that minoxidil is creating artificial growth from your hair follicles, your follicles are continuing to get more and more destroyed by DHT exactly as if you were on no treatments at all. Eventually, when your follicles die completely under DHT attack, minoxidil will no longer be able to stimulate any more artificial regrowth, and using it from this stage onwards when your follicles have literally died will be totally pointless. This is why you need to use an internal DHT blocker (finasteride or dutasteride). Currently, this is our only hope. Finasteride actually treats the problem rather than just covering it up. Without using a DHT blocker, you are going to go bald. That is a reality. Therefore, forget about minoxidil and instead start looking into using finasteride.

I'll only add this to the two previous posts :

You won't lose hair from combing too much, unless your really pull hard to untangle a knot and pluck some hairs out with the bulb.
Also, you won't lose more hair if you towel dry too aggressively, again unless you really do it so hard your scalp becomes bloody !

These actions may only break some of your hair, you may also lose more hair in telogen phase but a healthy hair won't fall because of that, the hair you lose has already been dead for months. Anagen phase (growth phase) : 3-4 years, telogen phase (resting phase) : 3 months.
