Month 5 on finasteride and Min and I’m seeing miniaturization everywhere on my scalp. When I started it was just thinning at the temples and slightly in the forelock. The rest of it was perfectly fine. I’ve only been applying minoxidil at the hairline but it’s possible that it’s being spread around when I style in the morning causing shedding throughout. I don’t know what to make of this but I might be buying a dermapen soon. It’s gotten so bad so quickly. I need some suggestions because this doesn’t seem normal. Pictures are with hair wet.

Wow I wish I’ll have as much hair as you when I’m 46. Are you sure your hair wasn’t like that before you even started treatment? Your hair is wet and under bright lighting so it’s much easier to see the scalp.

100% positive my hair wasn’t like this before I started treatment. It wasn’t even like this 2 months ago. I used to have very thick hair. When it was wet you couldn’t see the scalp like this.

42 same boat constant shed minoxidil was a nightmare. Finally jumped on Finasteride and. It’s been a miserable decline. Stuck though terrified to stop even though it’s not working. Two months = two years of the original pace.

I was asking because it happened to me. I was absolutely certain that the back and sides of my head were thinning aggressively during the past 6 months. Just yesterday I was going through my photo library and found a picture of 7 years ago that made me realize that I was always like that. I don’t have experience with fina and min but I read a lot of posts of people experiencing shedding 5-6-7 months after but eventually stopped/reduced. I don’t know, maybe someone who knows more will give you a better answer.

Do you expect to carry a full head of hair to the grave? You are 46 years old.

Man I wish it was all in my head. I’m praying that this is just a shed cycle like you said. I’d be thrilled to keep what I have now. And I keep saying that month after month. 6 months from now I fear I’ll be looking back and wishing I had what I have now!

Bro. 8 months ago I had a full head of hair. No receding. No thinning. And then it’s like a bomb went off. I’ve had massive bouts of alopecia areata since I was in my early twenties. I once lost 75% of the hair on the back of my head. I looked like a freak show. I’ve been dealing with hair loss almost my entire adult life. So forgive me for not buying into the “you’re 46 so what difference does it make” narrative.

2 months is probably not enough time to determine if it’s working or not for you. But it sounds similar to what I’ve experienced. I’m still holding out hope that things turn around. Hope it does for you as well.

I can't help but notice the color on some parts of your scalp where you have hair. It looks inflamed.

Is that "redness" accurate in person?

It’s funny you should say that because I think so too. I have had AA (alopecia arreata) for over 20 years. The last 10 years I was in remission. Then in about February of this year I got a pretty good attack on the back of my head. I started steroid injections in April and it has finally (mostly) filled in (see before /after pics). It was in May, one month into treating my AA flare up, that I noticed a very progressively thinning left temple. Then the right. Then the forelock. And now the entire top of my scalp. I started finasteride in July but it has only gotten worse. I’ve been applying minoxidil only at the hair line because that’s where it started. I’m wondering if over time I’ve gotten the minoxidil all over when I’m combing my hair (it would be almost impossible to apply after styling). Maybe this thinning is from a minoxidil shed. But to your original point I’ve akways maintained that this has to be connected to my original autoimmune flare up. I do think my entire scalp has inflammation. I also occasionally break out with postules on my scalp which is another sign that something else is going on. I saw my derm today and I convinced her to inject once into my forelock and suggested I use clobetssol for the next two weeks. Any other ideas on how to treat this inflammation?

My comment should bump your post so hopefully someone could read you last question and give you a better answer than I could.
Best wishes.

You cannot ''see" miniaturization happen all over. Your photos are also soaked hair which will make most people's hair look like it has thin areas.

Thanks. I think my whole scalp is showing signs of inflammation. I just think whatever is going on is connected to my immune system being all f’d up.

I understand your point. I keep my hair kind of long on top and when it’s dry it’s pretty covered up (for now) and I’m thankful for that. But there’s no doubt I’ve lost density everywhere (except the sides and back). Even dry when you shine a direct light on it you can see through to the scalp and that was not the case a couple of months ago. It’s like the thinning which started at the hairline has spread all over. So many stories here of dudes having an adverse reaction to finasteride. Just has me wondering.
