18 Year Old w/ Hairloss...Help Please

Well it seems that I have inherited my fathers genetics...sh*t lol. I first started noticing increased shedding when washing my hair during my senior year of high school...I was in an INCREBILE amount of stress because of finals and some dumb b**ch (most people refer to them as "girls"). I have kind of been in denial for the past year or so...always telling myself that I do not have hairloss. My head hasn't changed to much as far as lost hair, but I can tell in the front. My hairline is getting thinner and getting up there a little bit, and my bangs are getting thinner, and aren't covering as much of my forehead as they use to. I ordered Propecia, and I am currently using 1% Nizoral 3 times a week. As far as the Propecia goes...should I take about a pill every other day? Just not sure if I should be taking 1 mg everyday. I've included pictures of my situation:

I want to do something about this now, as opposed to trying to fix it when it is all gone. Basically I want to hold out until the cure is found, which will hopefully be in my 20's lol. Comments and suggestions are welcome, thanks everyone.

BTW, I had really bad acne a while back, and went on a course of Accutane for a while...I swear some of the effects of acne has an effect on hairloss...

All hairloss starts somewhere...all of us start off with alot of hair, just eventually lose it. I notice 20-30 hairs fall out after I shower, this includes when I am washing my hair then running my hands through my hair afterwards, just looking for some help on what I should do to stop it!

First of all, go read the basics about hairloss 101 (on this site) Then come to this forum, post and complain. you have no hairloss and upto 100 hair is common. Its just a phase. So go chill, **** some chicks, booze, play and enjoy life. Take some pics after a year and if you see hairloss make another post along with latest pics. I ll review it again then. (most likely I ll tell you the same thing again) Now be gone...

Snowrider,

Your temples look a little receded, about NW1.5 or NW2, which is absolutely fine by the way - a good look, and many people your age will have a similar look.

I think you're doing the right thing getting on the meds, however I would also see a Doctor for his opinion, plus ask your father how his hairloss progressed, what age he started, etc.

Stress can certainly aggravate things though, so I wouldn't be too alarmed just yet. You've probably had an accelerated period of loss just recently but I'll bet you it evens out and you won't see much change for a good while, perhaps many years.

By then, of course, there will be a cure or at the very least, much more effective medication available. Good luck!

LOL he is nowhere near a NW2....didnt you say you were a Norwood 2??? If your temples look that good, you shouldnt be posting either.

This kid has perfectly great hair, its a shame he had to look at his hand in the shower a few years to soon and now hair loss is implanted in his brain.

my advice to this guy, is go have fun. you dont have hair loss.

SnowRider, I personally don't think you have hairloss; your hairline seems to be taking on a mature shape. As Helpmeregrow said, it is perfectly normal to lose 100 hairs a day. He was, of course, being a complete ***, but it still stands that everyone finds hair in the shower, thinning or not.

Regarding your temples: I have seen may non-male pattern baldness guys with hair longer than yours pull their hair back like you have done and see a good many shorter hairs protruding. I don't think that in itself is reason to believe your hair is thinning.

However, it's your hair, and you would know better than I, so if you want to take propecia, then taking 1mg every other day should be fine.

This graph has been cited often on hairloss sites. Although this chart does not measure the effects of the 1mg dose, you can guess roughly where it would be on the chart.

Essentially, this should represent that 1mg every other day is nearly as effective as taking it every day.

BTW acne is related to male hormones, so yes there is definitely a link between hairloss and acne.

The Poor kid does not have any need to be on propecia....For Godssake look at his hair.... :hairy: Lets not push someone who is hardly loosing their hair on propecia....You sound like A bigger *** than I am.
He should probably consult a doctor rather than follow some idiot's advice and get on a hormonal drug...

Hey guys, I'd just like to say thanks for all the replies...I've decided to keep the Propecia in my medicine cabinet for now, and wait and see how things go before I decide to start taking it. I've been to several doctors...all of them saying that I do not have male pattern baldness...maybe I am just trying to convince myself that I do, I'm not really sure, it's just that if I do have it, I want to take care of it early on you know? Does my hair look like hair that could be the result of 1 year of hairloss? Thats when I started noticing it...is around last November and December, during my finals week. Thanks everyone, and I'll update this as needed.

I think you should just keep an eye on it. Maybe take some photo's every month or every other month and compare them. If it looks like it's getting any worse from your pictures then its time to think about doing something about it. But since you're unsure definitly dont jump the gun and start with the meds.

You can always post some more pictures in a few more months if you want some more opinions form people here.
A lot of people here know what theyre talking about when it comes to male pattern baldness.

Throw the propecia away, it is a completely inappropriate medication for you.

Given no sign of age-inappropriate hairline degradation on your head, I believe that you may just be going through a shed, which ALL people suffer from from time to time.

My recomendation would be that you do not take ANY medications, at all, until you start seeing true signs of pattern baldness.

Well I don't know. What I see is maybe a Norwood 1.5. But he still has a good hairline. Why not keep it?

wow, people are so quick to criticize others hairlines and then be modest when it comes to themselves.. its ridiculous what 1 person will say about themselves being a NW2 and then what another person will say is a NW1.5

No man has a female hairline, and those that do look slightly odd with a perfectly circular hairline. even actors who have the "best" hair do not have female/12 year old boy hairlines.

This kid should NOT go on propecia. Its ridiculous to advise him to. he has no hairloss...

I wasn't suggesting he go on propecia but maybe take a preventive measure. But I think JayB is right. It definitely not very noticeable. Just live your life and don't worry about it.

Listen to your doctor. You're in good shape hair-wise. You do NOT need to be taking a prescription medication for no reason. Ignore the guys rating your Norwood status. Get on with life!
