1 year on Propecia. Shedding made me near enough bald.

I posted 3 or so weeks ago about having a shed. I was concerned and asked theguys how long it takes for it to grow back.

Today after a routine hair wash I looking in the mirror to realise that I can see the whole of my back/top scalp. I'm bloody nearly gone bald!

In the last 12 months (which happens to be when I'm on finasteride) my hair loss which started when i was 21 (im 30 now) has accelerated TEN fold.

If I had not taken this medication I would have gone bald at 35-36. I know exactly the rate I was balding. It was slow and I had plenty of hair before I started on this.

I'm using SLS free shampoo now. Occasionally a few drops of nizoral in head & shoulders

The scalp feels great so I am hoping this mofo shred I just incurred an hour ago is brought back to life with new hair.

OR THAT's it . Failed. Finistride = a big Con. for me.

There is too many fail storied compared to success that I am reading about. I screwed up big time not doing research on this money making machine. My hair is paying for this mistake.

Honestly I am livid with the failure SLowing down hair loss. It's actually speeds it up! This is a fact!

If this medication work and halts my hair loss. I will donate a three figure sum to this website. But I am so confident that the claims made by this drug are false that I can safely bet my money on it.

I will wait 2-3 months and see exactly where those hairs fell out to see if they were replaced.

Regards, angry customer.

Drop it if your so confident in thinking propecia has only accelerated your hairloss.

Dude, it's not Finasteride losing its efficacy. It's your male pattern baldness kicking into overdrive. Hop on Dutasteride! Also, why not take Minoxidil? They have a synergistic effect.

it's funny how it's kicked into overdrive since I got onto finasteride.

I'm going to have to shave it off because of this medication and then use minoxidil. Which I started to use before finasteride. I was on minoxidil for 3-4 months until it started eating up the front of my scalp. So that worried me and I decided to go onto finasteride.

The effective of this drug is so hyped it's untrue until you actually use it. It is over hyped therefore over priced.

Jese it's like taking vitamin tablets and expecting to live ten years longer.

Yeah miracles don't exist but you don't effect it to go worse. Jese I would have been happy for it to slow down, forget about new hair.

Just slow the fcuk down. But don't kick the male pattern baldness into overdrive and make me bald within 6 months.

Anyway like EVERYONE says, the hair will grow back. Just have to stay on it for 2-3 months for the shedded hair to grow back. Will report back.

if you think finasteride is the cause of perceived accelerated hairloss you don't understand the drug

From what I understand Finasteride alters your hormone levels. It's scientifically studied that these hormonal imbalances/fluctuation can cause temporary hair loss and Telogen Effuvium.
Based on this, it seems within reason to believe that some people on Finasteride experience a prolonged/chronic hair shedding period because their bodies aren't as capable of adapting (or won't as easily adapt) to the drug. In this situation hair loss will visually accelerate, but not necessarily deteriorate the quality of hairs.

OP, I'm in the same boat. I used to have a beautiful afro 2 years ago. Then saw slow hair loss on the left side and ignored it for a year. Finally got on Min/finasteride in sept 2014 and since then my hair has gone to sh*t rapidly. I was a NW1 and the only reason I'm not a NW3 yet is because some hairs are still hanging on making it look like I'm NW2. My guess in another month they will disappear and I'll be NW3.

Maybe you should switch finasteride manufacturers? I've recently switched from generic finasteride to merck propecia. It costs more but I didn't feel generics were doing anything for me but making me shed rapidly. Unfortunately with the switch 3 weeks ago its made me shed on the top frontal area. Its pretty bad I can now see the scalp.

I doubt his meds are fake if that's what you are suggesting. finasteride is a very cheap drug to manufacture.

There are fake versions of pretty much any drug. OP just needs to get his blood work done and see what is actually happening. Speculating and pointing the finger at this supposed genuine finasteride is just scare mongering and non beneficial to forum users considering starting the drug.

What would you look for in the blood test. DHT and testosterone?

David G. I can see the whole top of the scalp now even though there is hair there. But I have not waited long enough for the hairs to grow back.
One month since I posted. Another month left and will see if I have been doomed.

Visually after every wash now there is deterioration.

Hey baldymonk,
I understand your frustration and I agree that 1 year of treatment is a long period, however some men do really get the results in 1 to 2 years of treatment. I know it is hard to accept, and it is your choice to continue the treatment or to drop finasteride. Moreover, any medication can work differently for different people. I say it because finasteride saved my hair.

Dutasteride is more potent than finasteride, consult a specialist if it makes sense to switch from finasteride to dutasteride.

It takes more than 1 year to receive maximum benefit from propecia. It dosen't mean it takes more than a year to get results. However for those like OP that report constant shedding and deterioration of hair even at the 1 year mark it is unlikely his hair will magically grow back in with another year's usage of propecia.

Studies say that it can take up to 1 year to get VISIBLE results. And by the 2nd year of treatment the hair improves significantly. Some lucky men get the results much earlier.

I posted April the 6th. It is 19th July. That's over three months.
The shedded hair did not come back.

Been on it over a year now. In this period as per 1st post. Hairloss has accelerated.
The fact the shedded hair did not come back and hair loss was accelerated means propecia has failed. and when this dosage is complete in a months time or so I will contemplate dutasteride for the second year.

I would definitely go dutasteride if I were you in fact I am contemplating this myself, I've been on finasteride for 2 months and so far my hair is still shedding and diffusing all over the top and ****. I will have to add minoxidil, but I don't think the finasteride will hold out in the long run.

Same thing happened to me except I had really great results from generic finasteride until the manufacturers changed. After that my hair went to sh*t. I have now switched to Propecia and even though it's like 10x more expensive, it's worth it because I think I am finally seeing an improvement.

I did see a shed when I switched from generic finasteride to Merck Propecia but right now I think my hair looks better than it did a month ago.

finasteride can accelerate your hairloss bro, worst feeling ever when it happens. Accelerated mine permanently. Some people just respond terribly to it.
