In order for Saw Palmetto to work you need 960mg dose?

The accepted recommendation for saw palmetto is 160 mg twice a day of a standardized concentration of the fatty acids extracted from the berries. The study in question used three times that much, 960 mg a day. That is enough to seriously reduce DHT levels.

I didn't really feel that saw palmetto really doing anything to my body until I used the 85-95% version. I could take 550 mgs of plain SP and not feel it but if I take 160 mgs of the high % version, it is generally really noticeable. I been taking saw palmetto for many months already and I do notice shedding from it (I think?) but am unsure about regrowth. The SP combo i bought recently has even more potent effects on my body since it also has a pygeum extract in it with pumpkin seed oil. I think if you are going down the SP route, you should maybe consider also taking beta sitosterol. Many people on this forum say you are wasting your time with these kinds of supplements but I still have faith in them. However, I have just recently started taking a low-to-moderate dose of finasteride and 1/2 ml 5% minoxidil every day along with my supplements. It would be difficult for me to say which specific treatment had the most effect on regrowth or maintenence. The recent move to use the more tried and true methods was because I just noticed a bald spot on the back of my head. I will continue to take my SP combo regardless because it makes my prostate feel pretty good anyway. I reccomend at least starting on minoxidil with the SP if you haven't already.
A Propecia a day keeps the hair transplant doctor away.

If your trying to reduce DHT why not just use the propecia which is much more proven? Reducing DHT to the point of slowing hair loss just means your going to get the same sides as propecia you cant have your cake and eat it too.

    EACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you're trying to reduce DHT, then take Fin. If you're freaked out by the sides...just realize that the claimed sides are due to the lack of DHT. So, using Saw to reduce your DHT would still give you sides.

But....you have a 98% chance of not getting sides, and about a .002% chance of getting long-term sides.

I'll add to above that I personally got nasty sides effects from taking saw palmetto which were very similar to the noted side effects some people describe getting from Propecia. However I've never had those problems with Propecia itself...

What type of sides did you get from Saw Palmetto, how long did you take SP, and did you see any improvement like less shedding or regrowth?

I developed some sexual sides from Saw Palmetto, think about it, it's suposed to work in a similar way to finasteride, you do the math!

    1. Ball-ache, mild ED, low libido, nipple pain, and (the day I gave up on sp) internal bleeding. 2. Two months. Couldn't take any more 3. Didn't see any difference with my hair.

I only had Propecia side-effects, admittedly mild, for the first two or three weeks, but far worse with saw palmetto. And whilst Propecia isn't completely safe(!) at least it's proven to help with hair loss.
