Is trichodynia (burning scalp syndrome) permanent?

    Hi all,

I have trichodynia (burning scalp) for 6 months now. It is definitely based on my huge anxiety-depression and doesn't seem to get better without the use of anti-anxiety drugs. Lots of hair are shedding of course, especially when the pain is at its peak.

I just wanted to ask if someone knew a treatment, other than anti-depressants/anti-anxiety drugs. Trichodynia seems to be a symptom of telogen effluvium in my case, since I faced a really stressful situation a few months before it started to happen.

Also, does anybody know if the hair will grow back after trichodynia is gone?

I get a burning/itching/crawling scalp, and I also suffer from depression&anxiety. I have been diagnosed with female pattern hair loss though, so i'm presuming the discomfort is due to the inflamatory response whereby the follicles are being attacked by DHT . However, I do believe the sensations are stronger when i'm more anxious. You could try nizoral shampoo.
I don't know if your hair will grow back after the trichodymmia goes.

Re: Is trichodynia (burning scalp syndrome) permanent?

I was first diagnosed with LPP then a new review of my biopsy indicates Dysesthesia/Trichodynia.

I went to a specialist that is very well known. I'm on Cetaphil Lotion with Tacrolimus (compound RX) and I apply it once a day to my scalp. It appears as if it's calming the burning.

In addition I've read low dosages of anti-depressants of which I also started. Everything points to this (or at least in my opinion).... be good to yourself! Stress can cause so much damage to every part of your body and the more you worry about your hair, the more stress it will cause. A terrible cycle but it's the truth.

I'm also going to see a D.O. sometime within the next week or so. Hopefully a Osteopathic Doctor will give me an overall approach to good health. Not just my scalp but a new direction overall. From the inside out.

I know how you feel... this has been a journey I wouldn't want to wish on anyone. At least it's a start in the right direction.

    Blessings
