The importance of Genetic research in finding new treatments for hair loss.
As many of you may already know, On June 26 of this year, President Clinton announced the completion of the first survey of the entire human genome. This working draft reference DNA sequence will provide scientists with the road map to an estimated 90% of genes on every chromosome...

Knowledge about these genes will speed the understanding of how genetics influences disease development, aid researchers looking for genes responsible for conditions such as Alopecia (hair loss), and contribute to the discovery of new treatments for them.

It is still far too early to tell exactly where all this will go, however Clinton has taken a major step which will more than quadruple the potential for newer and better hair loss treatments in the next 2-10 years. As we all know, the first step in defeating the monster is to understand the monster. He and British Prime Minister Tony Blair have requested that ALL of the information related to the human genome sequence should be made free, public, and accessible when it is published later this year. Why is this relevant? Quite simply ..... because the strength and motivation of human greed will power an incredible storm of biotech development and a race to find the cure for anything, and everything, including hair loss... which already is a billion dollar a year industry.

The internet, too, allows for less ownership of intellectual property. Consequently, it has created a "level playing field" for companies to take initiative. Success has been obtained due to quality services, rather than control of intellectual property or large budgets. Businesses who do not focus on quality will not succeed in this new economy. Nobody will own the human genome info, and consequently hundreds of biotech companies will be racing to find treatments and cures to everything from cancer to hair loss. This balance of freedom and control will *encourage* competition and preserve profits for companies that produce USEFUL treatments.

What does this mean for you? Quite simply put, in the next 10 years there will be a race for the first company to use this information and make effective treatments, also making them some of the richest. It will be a Win Win Win situation for all.
